In-Game Chat

One of the best parts of ShellShock was the ability to easily chat with the other players while playing.  I’d like to make it even easier in SSL2.

When enter is pressed, a larger chat area will be displayed.

You’ll be able to see the entire chat in a much more convenient way here, without fiddling with the tiny controls in the mini-chat.  We will also keep the chat-bubble system in place.

How else can we improve on in-game communication?

So is the chat box (but not a box?) in a fixed location on the left side?
If it is, I suggest fading it slightly, as to not obscure the aiming or visible position of a tank in that location.

    • kChamp says:

It’s only visible when it’s toggled on by pressing enter. So my guess is many of you would only turn it on for a second or two to check what was said.

      • crazytotof says:

I seriously think this chat is perfect, even more great than in the 1. The part I loved in SS1 was the chat, always fun to meet great people o/ (exept stupid ones but mute them and the world is peacefull)

    • dgrantp says:

i have a question about friends. Will the friends we have made also be transferred over to our new accounts or will we have to find them again? Also i have an idea reguarding a tank upgrade. I think that there should be a weapon upgrade which increases the damage of every weapon aquired by 2% or something. Anyway, just a thought. Please reply. Thanks for your time

  2. Zbricer says:

    Perhaps tabbing?
The *at the star would work indeed, but to have a team chat separated from the main one is better, avoids flood-lost information or advice; the team tab would show when entering a *comment, the regular would show when just typing.
Another thing not to miss anything would be a toggleable mixed window.

  3. mateo32381 says:

I would like to see a full screen option. I play from the newgrounds website and some times i scroll away from the “battle screen” or accidentally click off the game window.

  4. main_gi says:

Did anyone else try to find out what the small bottom ~5 pixels were?

  5. Poiuy2 says:

Am I the only one who thought of this idea that made you decide that you were gonna add this in the game? Or did someon else tell you this suggestion? Anyways, good idea for the game.

  6. Poiuy2 says:

Another thing, if someone says something, can you make it optional( if there is something that can fix stuff) so that there is a little sound or something to let the other person know if they chatted or not? This can be very useful! Also, a fix button if needed. The fix button could have whatever that people do/don’t want. Like always in the lower-right corner, Quality button, Theme music, sound.

  7. uselessmidget says:

You should add more symbols to the library so we can say things like: ಠ_ಠ
Also text effects would be cool :red: BLARGH! THIS TEXT IS RED. THAT MEANS IM MAD!

Being able to type /w examplename to send a private message to someone.

    • evani says:

i agree with fuzzypickle16, that would be great if you and a friend (from the real world) were playing and wanted to talk abt. school/work without disturbing the others, it would be possible

  9. FrankieIsJesus says:

I know this is about in-game communication, but I assumed since this was the most recent post I would get a faster response.

My suggestion concerns presentation. I would like to see more design in the maps appearance. For example, if the map is a desert setting, there could be a sunny, blue sky in the background, (some sort of art, even) and cacti and sand on the ground. I felt that SSL1′s maps were bland, one solid color (I know you could get gradients or even a rainbow map) and almost depressing to look at.

This could also fuse into the custom map creation. You could incorporate different items (not weapon drops) into the custom map options as well, and even have players be able to upload their own art into the background.

This is just my suggestion, but I hope you look at it critically and truly consider it. As it would make my, my friends’ and fellow players’ experience all the more entertaining.

I really look forward to your upcoming game, SSL2, and I’m sure I’ll enjoy it even more than SSL1.

    Put special characters, like Ç, ´` ~ ^ ” ‘ etc..

  11. Shesiressu says:

    Hello,

    - Private chat with /w or such.
    - Show a star before the name in the chat if someone is a deluxe member.
    - Chat moderator. REALLY.

    Regards,
    Shesiressu

    • colinkochevarYouTubePoop says:

Chat moderator? Who do you think they are? Jagex???
I just can’t see that happening, unless you’re thinking of lobby only, and even then it’ll only happen if they get enough players consistently, which I suppose it very well may… :)

    • Manma Mario says:

If you swear, you will be banned for 3 more matches. Unless you use “*”s.

      Ex: S**t, f**k, etc.

      • TheCrow says:

Uh, Mario, there’s most likely going to be a filter profanity button in SSL2 like there is in SSL1. So that’s actually a bad idea… In my opinion.

  12. JOJOJONTESSL2 says:

You should do codes like red:hi and hi would turn red but it works with blue, red, green, white, yellow and multi coloured

    JOJOJONTESSL2

    (Plz use my idea)

  13. kChamp says:

Good ideas I’ve seen so far are PMs, more special characters, and colored text (maybe).

  14. d15gshock says:

Why make a stupid fade chat box?

Why not just make a *dedicated* chat box at the bottom or side?
At least this way it way block our stupid play.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been blocked by the chat bubble.

  15. de40 says:

I have just been playing around with this idea. Love the game but really have never understood why with such player interaction there was no better chat/tracking abilities.

I created this to run alongside the game. Basic idea to keep chat running when hopping through games and an easy way to share codes.

    http://www.tanklink.co.nr (free domain don’t worry)

Yours looks a lot better ha

    Respect.

    • kChamp says:

Neato! Chat should be a lot better in SSL2, both in-game and not.

      • de40 says:

        Thanks man

I just want to ask- cool chat panels are great n that but a basic friends list or ‘invite friend’ directly option would be cool. I like to find a decent room of people and play all my games with them but if we start to lag or lose someone its a crazy effort of sending emails to them to get them invited again….

Thank you K- by the way don’t become an illustrator! ;)

  16. thewindandrain says:

The main issue I have with the current shell shock chat is that the word bubbles get in the way of aiming. If someone in front of you says something while you are trying to aim, it overlaps your aim projection. Perhaps making the chat boxes more transparent/and or allowing the aiming bar to overlap it would get rid of this problem?

  17. noah65511 says:

when are they gonna put on the actual game? i am exited to play it

  18. HardCor says:

You should make it so you can talk to one individual, team, other team, etc. That way you can communicate with friends easier.

  19. ranster12 says:

Create an few boxes at the bottom that are customizable. If you wanted to for ex. say “nice shot” or “move back” you would only have to click the appropriate button. 5 or so would do with a team only option.

  20. jd says:

It wasn’t, ShellShock Live 2 was not there (http://shellshock.com/)

How it was? Tell me what URL

  21. Agent60 says:

It would be really great if there something like a built-in translator, so if two players had different languages, then they could talk to each other more fluently. I had that problem with players A LOT. Thanks! :D

  22. de40 says:

    @ Hardcor
    @Agent60

I just want to say that http://www.tanklink.co.nr has the potential for all of that. I think there is a limit to what can be added and a translator would be awesome but I think it would also be a nightmare…

BUT it is something I can add to Tank Link easily. Chat one side- Google translate box the other- and your friends list. Sorted. I have been using this in my other tab when playing and stayed with the same 6 players over 8 games, simply because we stayed in contact and could share the code to join.

Anyway I am also exited for SS2

  23. shadowkillertwo says:

is this game going to be a turn based game or is it going to be a live action?

  24. Atham says:

There’ssss a niccce map you have there ;) Nice working on the game!
Do you know when it maybe will be out?

  25. nnp6420 says:

There should be a way to choose to filter profanity once you have started the game

  26. blackout620 says:

How about a shield power or maybe a digger weapon maybe turn invisible for one or two turns just an idea maybe being able to change tank color make your own design upgrade-able weapons lev by tanks not just one huge lev.

  27. sima says:

thanks for new version very nice

  28. sivaninho says:

    hi everyone

    i suggest random begin turn
not allways the one on the middle who begins, it can be the first one or the last

    sorry for my english

    a fan from France, Paris

  29. Manma Mario says:

We could add pictures, by pressing number buttons it’ll make funny sounds.
Hope there’d be my suggestion :)

  30. korhaniski says:

u know what would be interesting to see? Comic book mode chat bubbles with sounds. for example when u hit u could display a cloud and a text within it displaying ZONK! or ZOINK! TAK! with a thump sound or something. and when u miss POOF!

    little things makes life…

  31. vitaomengao says:

    What about a facebook version??
    And a Tablet one??

    • kChamp says:

Facebook version will be available right off the bat. Tablet version will probably be released sometime down the road.

      • TheCrow says:

Kyle, I can’t really play as my SoulCrusher level 24 account.. Had to make a SouICrusher account. With an I. By the way, this is for Facebook. Please try to fix this bug. I can’t even log out successfully there.

  32. Trick76 says:

Looking good Champ. Can’t wait for the new edition!

  33. Hic142 says:

SSL on a tablet would be cool…

anyway, chat looks awesome kchamp! :)

  34. JDcompy says:

    Hey bud,

One of the things I’ve most found lacking is that, while I can buddy my friends in Kongregate, chat with them on the side bar, and get together with them to play games, I lose touch too easily with friends made in SSL that don’t have kongregate. I met a guy last night and we were and awesome team and wanted to play together again. But unless I get an email, I’ll never find him.

I know you set up the friends system so that you can see when they were last on, but I’d really like some sort of “buddy list” and or way to message the person if they are on. The current system, in my opinion, doesn’t offer much in the way of contacting your friends and finding them to play with them. I don’t want to lose my newly made ssl buddies. Hopefully we can make this part a little better.

  35. there should be more a button to choose to chat in a chat-box or in fully screen, for those who prefer the old chat-box, and the full screen chat”box” must be transparent to see who is shooting, etc.

  36. Dudeparallel says:

Yes, this is a great idea.

Also, with the colored text, make primary and secondary colors available to all at 25, 50 and 75% luminescence.
But to get any other colors and darker / lighter shades, essentially the entire color wheel, premium.
Seems like a nice balance between basic and premium things that make those people stand out.

Colors can be added by a simple system, /cX/ where X is a color number. (which would show up in the quick help button you could add next to chat?)
    0 white, 1 gray, 2 black, 3 red, 4 green, 5 blue, 6 cyan, 7 magenta, 8 yellow.
To get the different shades, you can just combine 0, 1 and 2 with the other colors.
So, to get dark red, /c23/, simple.
For more advanced colors, it would be /cRRGGBB/ in hex. (or even 0-255 as well)
    Ends with just a /c/.

  37. dgrantp says:

What about the friends we have made in ssl1. Will they be transfered ove to the new account or will we have to find them again. Also i have an idea for a tank upgrade. What about a WEAPON UPGRADE slot that increases the damage of all your weapons by a low percentage like 2% and when fully upgraded maybe like 10% or something. Thankyou for your time and please reply. CANT WAIT FOR SSL2!

  38. Arien742 says:

the annoying thing about the ssl 1 chat bubble was the chat size, maybe you guys dont do this but i make little images with the chat like this
    ___
    / o o \
    \ —- /

  39. turbopilot says:

Not sure if this should in the In-game Chat section or not…
During deathmatches it would be fantastic if you could bet on who you think will win. Completely optional, but something like 1 coin put into a pot, winners get the coins at the end. I thought of this when I was knocked out early and sat there for several rounds, yes I was chatting with the other poor sap who was just watching as well, but we both would have tossed a coin in for a friendly wager.
Just something to keep people interested in a deathmatch game if they have been killed in early rounds.
